Has this ever happened to you?  Perhaps you had a spill and rush to grab a rag with a cleaner and start dabbing the spot in hopes of removing a potential stain?  Then when are finished you are relieved to see there is no evidence of a stain!  You then high five everyone in the room and proceed with a victory march around the room singing “We are the champions” by the music band Queen.   Then, the very next day you return to find you’re your spot has reappeared!  You then realize your victory march and song was done a little too early.  You now grab the product and rag and repeat it again.  You find a month later that this never ending reappearing battle will not end.  Then soon you see what appears to be a dirty spot on top of the spot you so desperately tried to get rid of.  At this point you give up and decide to schedule an appointment with your local professional carpet cleaner.  Then the day after he is finished you see that unwanted spot reaper.  AHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!

So what’s the answer?    Well if you have a spot that reappears right away then more likely the padding underneath your carpet is contaminated by the spill.  When it keeps reappearing this is called “wicking.”  This is cause by a large saturation that makes its way into the backing and padding of your carpet.  Because the top of the carpet is cleaned with water and or product it is then drying upwards casing the unwanted spot to reappear.  It’s just like a wick in oil.  If the wick remains in the oil it will soon appear on the top surface.  How to address this problem is by taking half water and half white distilled vinegar then pour it into your carpet and padding.  Pour generously like pouring a cup of coffee.  Once the entire spot is covered, let it dwell for 5 minutes.  Then grab some towels and start blotting or use a shop vacuum to suck it up and out of the carpet padding.  Then when it is as dry as you can get it then place a small fan over the spot to completely dry.  This should be dry before the day is over.  If no spot appears after this, you will know for sure you did it correctly and can celebrate your victory.

Another way a spot can reappear is if it shows up dark after a month or so of cleaning.  This is likely a residue deposit left in the carpet from the carpet spotter used.  They leave a sticky or alkaline substance that creates a magnet for dirt.  Whenever you walk on it the spot it attracts the soil off your feet.     When left in the carpet and not rinsed well they will cause dirt to stick like a magnet and reappear over a short period of time.  If you use a spotter be sure not to over apply.  If you use water and vinegar fist it will help with using less of carpet cleaning spotter.  I suggest spaying the rag vs the directly spraying the carpet.   If you have this residue problem and can’t seem to get rid of it, you can have your carpets professionally cleaned.  If you hire them be sure to point it out to the technician so that they can rinse it out thoroughly.  Also if they use an acidic rinse this will help neutralize the alkaline of the product.
