How to Get Gum Out of Carpet

  • Gum is a joy shared by both young and old! It’s used for the older people to have fresh breath and something to chew and the younger to blow bubbles and enjoy the sweet taste.  No matter how you look at it, just about everyone loves bubble gum!  However gum is created with resin which is the main part you chew, wax that’s created to soften the gum and elastomer that adds flexibility. Also it is made with polymers.  Polymers repel water and they’re attracted to oil. When they come into contact with oily surfaces, such as sidewalks, soles of shoes, fingers, and hair, they form a strong bond and stick tight. The long chains of chemical bonds within polymers make cleaning up even more difficult, because they tend to stretch rather than break.  Can you say no good!  Below I have listed some helpful tips that can help remove gum out of your carpet.

ICE

Ice is a great hardener and is great at causing the gum will become brittle by becoming hardened.  You may have to let the ice sit on the gum for a few minutes.  Just feel the gum with your hand and see if it needs a little more time to become hardened.  After you notice it being hardened enough just simply use a utensil to scrape and break it off.  After its removed you just simply place it into your mouth and chew!

PEANUT BUTTER

This works for someone who gets gum stuck in their hair.    Its very common to do this, however did you know this could work on your carpet?  Crazy right?  Well its very simple just be careful not to over use the peanut butter because it can be tricky to rinse.   After the gum is removed simply rinse out the peanut butter with soap and water.

OLIVE OIL OR VEGETABLE OIL

Olive oil is what helps to remove gum.  Water can’t remove it therefore water biased products wont work on gum.  Try Olive oil or vegetable oil. Just remember not to over use because water does not rinse oil out very well.

WD-40 SPRAY

Only use WD-40 spray at last resort.  It is very flammable and can cause your floor to go up in flames.  When you use it be sure to rinse it out thoroughly.   Remember this contains oil and can be difficult to rinse out.  Use very sparely.  Less is more.

VINEGAR

Allow vinegar to dwell for a few minutes then scrape off with a knife.   Before using vinegar be sure to test in an inconspicuous area for color fast.  Test any product to make sure it won’t remove color.   Then slap the knees and cut the cheese!
