Baby food is known to be one of the hardest stains to remove from carpet. The reason for this is because it contains protein. Protein has more staining power than even oil-based stains. If baby food is spilled on the carpet then you must react fast as possible. Remember the longer the baby food sits on carpet fibers the more difficult it will be to remove the stain.
Here Are Some Things You Will Need:
- 1 cup of warm water
- A spray bottle
- Towels
- A thick book or heavy object
- Vacuum
- Liquid laundry detergent
- A knife or spoon
How to Remove The Stain:
- Grab the spray bottle and mix ½ teaspoon of the laundry detergent with ¾ of warm water.
- Use the spoon or knife to remove as much of the baby food as possible.
- Remember not to spread or rub the stain into the carpet fibers. This will worsen the stain.
- Some carpet fibers can’t handle liquid detergent without being damaged or have color loss. So make sure to find an inconspicuous area and test first.
- Now lightly mist the stain with the cleaning solution till it is damp.
- Let it sit for about 10-15 minutes. This gives time for the product to work.
- Now start to blot the stain with towels. Remember not to spread or rub so the stain doesn’t set in, but gently work from the outside in.
- Now repeat steps 5-7 until the stain is gone and you are no longer picking up residue.
- Now place a clean white towel over the wet area. Place the heavy object or book on top. This allows the backing of your carpet to dry upwards into the towel. If this method is avoided then the spot can reappear after it dries.
- When the area is totally dry then use the vacuum to remove dried residue to help the fibers return their texture.
- If the detergent doesn’t work then try shaving cream. What you do is apply the lathing type shaving cream to the stain and let it set in for approximately 15-20 minutes. Then spray the area with warm water then follow steps 7-10.
- If shaving cream is not doing the trick then try hydrogen peroxide. What you do is mix one part hydrogen peroxide with one part water. Mist and allow to dwell for about 20-3- minutes. Then repeat steps 7-10.
- If all these steps fail then I recommend contacting a local professional carpet cleaner.
Additional Tips and Ideas
- Remember to stay away from products that contain lanolin or bleach. Often times it can remove color from your carpet.
- If you have purchased carpet from a manufacturer then read all warning and care instructions.
- Natural fibers like wool are very sensitive to chemicals and should be used with natural fiber cleaners only.
- Don’t be afraid to contact a local professional carpet cleaner if you’re not sure what to do.
- Don’t walk on the areas treated when wet, because spots will reappear or wet fibers attract more dirt and could result in a bigger staining issue.
