If you are a pet owner like me you may have run into times when your beloved pet decides to go the bathroom on your carpets, rugs or upholstery.  It is often a very aggravating and annoying situation.  Especially the fact that is stinks and often leaves a stain even when cleaned well.    Below I have listed some way to help prevent from stench and staining.  I hope you find it very helpful!

First start by grabbing some paper towels or bath towels to soak up the urine.  Then lay something heavy on top of the towels helping to absorb as much waist as possible.  Let it saturate for a few minutes.   You may have to replace paper towels or bath towels when they appear to be soaked.  After you have absorbed most of the moisture then rinse the area with hot water and finish by blotting it up with a paper towel.  Remember to rinse all the way to the padding.  That’s where most of the urine is.

After you have completed this process, use a pet odor neutralizer to properly sanitize and clean the area.   Dog urine cleaners can be located at most pet stores.

If the urine has been settling for a while a different approach is required.  Try renting an extractor or wet vac.  It will help by forcing water and the urine through the carpet.  I recommend not using chemical cleaners because they can leave a stinky residue that retracts soils or can cause permanent damage to carpet.  They can cause more problems than solving them.  Instead try using some vinegar.  Vinegar is a great acidic cleaner that often neutralizes urine and helps to clean and remove the urine.  If you clean the area and still see a little pit of yellow then try using peroxide.  Before using peroxide on an open area, you should first test clean an inconspicuous area like a closet.  Sometimes urine is hard to spot, if you have a hard time identifying the spot then try using a black light when the room is dark and you should see a glow that identifies the spot.

It is possible by your best attempts you may not be able to remove the odor or stain issue.   Try contacting your local professional carpet cleaner.  With their equipment and expertise they can more often than not resolve the issue.
