1. White Vinegar

Combine 1/2 cup of hot water with 1/2 cup of vinegar. If you want your cleaner to have a pleasant scent, toss in a few drops of lavender essential oil. Pour the solution into your steam cleaner and use it as directed on the machine.
We will say that it’s wise to test the cleaner on a small section of the carpet before you use it on the entire thing. This way you can see if it’s going to damage it first.
2. Salt
Next up on the list is salt. If you accidentally spill a glass of red wine on your carpet, pour a little bit of salt over it. Let it sit on the stain for about fifteen minutes and then vacuum it up.
It should have absorbed some of the liquid. Now all you have to do is go behind it with one of the other carpet and rug cleaners on this list to finish the job.
3. Essential Oils
Essential oils can make your carpets smell great and some of them tend to kill any bacteria that are festering inside the fibers. That’s why it’s such a common part of any good cleaning recipe.
Combine one cup of vinegar with 1 cup of warm water. Throw in about fifteen drops of your essential oil of choice and two teaspoons of salt. Shake the bottle, spray it on the carpet, and let it dry before going behind it with a vacuum.
We’ll tell you the best essential oil you can use is lavender. It’s got a calm scent and it’s perfectly safe to use if you have pets and children at home. Not all oils can say the same.
4. Baking Soda
Another one of the main home carpet cleaners that people swear by is baking soda. You can make a quick cleaning powder with it by adding around ten drops of any essential oil to a cup of it. Sprinkle it on your carpet and let it sit for 24 hours before you vacuum it up.
That will give it enough time to absorb the stain and get rid of any odor that was caused by it. You may have to repeat this process a few times but it works.
5. Dish Soap
Dish soap is effective against most stains and it’s not harsh enough to do any harm to your carpets. Combine 1/2 tsp of dish liquid with 32 oz of water in a spray bottle. If you’re dealing with a more damaging stain like blood or ink, you may have to add a bit of vinegar into the mix.
Spray the stain and let it sit there and work its magic for about ten minutes. When the time is up, gently blot at the stain with a cloth. Don’t rub it or you may make things worse.
6. Puracy Carpet Cleaner
If you don’t want to deal with the work involved with the DIY methods, there are a few products on the market that might work for you. The first is Puracy.
Put a bit of this cleaner in your shampooer and it should be able to tackle any stain that you throw at it. If you don’t own a shampooer, that’s okay too. It works for hand cleaning as well.
