Oh the joys of oil spills, especially on carpet!  Oil is a challenge to remove with water.  Water and oil are like opposites that don’t attract.  Water based products can be difficult to remove oil.  Some people have tried to remove oil with gasoline or WD40 because oil can remove oil very easily.   When attempting this method you are adding more oil to your carpet and padding.  Oil is a great dirt collector so even though the spot is instantly removed you will over time as you travel on it will notice a dirt patch appear, not to mention your adding horrible toxic chemicals to your indoor enjoyment.  Listed below I have come up some ways to remove the oil more

  1. BLOT, BLOT, BLOT.  Whenever you spill anything this is should be the first step to removing it.   Use a dry sponge, towel, or even a brown paper bag to blot with.    You want to be careful not to press to hard or try to over agitate because this can also cause further spreading of the spill.
  2. RUBBING ALCOHOL.   If you use rubbing alcohol right after blotting then it will begin to break down the stain and transfer it to your cloth.  I recommend not over applying the rubbing  alcohol to the spot so it won’t spread the oil spill further but apply a little amount to the towel then simply rub gently.  You want to be careful not to press to hard or try to over agitate because this can also cause further spreading of the spill.
  3. COAT WITH POWDER.   After blotting sprinkle a generous amount of baking power on top. Let it absorb for most of the day.  After it’s saturated for a while go ahead a vacuum it up.  If the stain persist then try our next step.
  4. WASH WITH DISH SOAP.   Dish soap is known for its ability to fight against grease. Mix the dish soap with some water then rub with a brush or sponge and allow the product to sit for about 1 1/2 minutes.   Then rinse out very well.
