Today many people are into switching heathier cleaning and DYI products/methods for cleaning their home. It saves the environment and of course money. However there are DYI cleaning myths out there that can be destructive or simply ineffective. Below I have listed some of these myths to expose and educate about some of the errors used in cleaning our homes.
1. – Using a Newspaper to Clean Windows
WRONG! Newspaper is not only lighter and more susceptible to tearing during use, it can leave permanent stains on your windows. The ink can spread when wet. Do yourself a favor and buy some paper towels don’t experiment this paper myth on your windows!
2. – Vinegar Can Clean Everything
Vinegar is a great home cleaner. vinegar can help you with certain home cleaning tasks like cleaning the dingy toilet bowl ( white distilled vinegar can remove stubborn stains by pouring down and brushing vigorously) it can cause slight damage to certain areas of your home. If you want to use vinegar as a natural cleaner, I recommend you not use on the following surfaces:
• Hardwood Floors
• Wax Floors
• I’ve heard that it can cause issues with unsealed tile grout, however I don’t think it is that severe.
3. – Use Coca-Cola to clean your toilet
There are pros and cons to using Coca-Cola to clean your toilet. The citric acid in the product will have a great effect with the cleaning, but the sugar in the coca-cola can be dangerous, as it attracts bacteria. If you came behind with something else like (vinegar) it would help remove sugar particles. Vinegar is actually a much better idea when it comes to toilet cleaning by itself.
4. – Handwashing your dishes is better than using the dishwasher
Although it may be a little more fulfilling and satisfying to scrub the dishes yourself than using a dishwasher. However a dishwasher will do a much better job of removing the bacteria from your crockery. There is nearly 400 times more bacteria left on the dishes after hand washing when compared to using the dishwasher! In this case I think it pays to be a little lazy.
Myth #5 – Always wash clothes in cold water
Washing clothes in cold water may be a great way to save on energy bills and keep clothes looking fresh. But by using hot water it’s the best way to remove bacteria and germs from your clothing.. Hot water is simply the best way to kill mold, viruses and other germs. So try to turn the dial to hot every once in a while, especially if you have been sick.
