Small Business vs Big Companies

There was a time, not too long ago where the customer could be serviced by the owner in almost every occupation.  It was common for both customer and business person to have a mutual bond that transcended the big company model.

For example in a remote town you could have a chance to meet the owner in a grocery store.  Often times it is the owner who would serve you.  He would show great pride in all his products, sincere concern, and always exceeding expectations.  This business person would live local, right down the street and a family man.  Someone you would know by name, trust and look forward to seeing at every visit.

Not every small business is like this one, but odds are if a person both owned and represented their own business, more than likely the highest standards would be kept and sincere care would be given.

In today’s big company model it’s difficult to uphold these same expectations.  During your trip to the company store you may notice the person standing behind the counter.  They wear the company name tag, fulfill a job description and is micromanaged.  As a result the sense of pride and ownership is simply not there.

Seven months ago I ventured into my first business as a professional carpet, upholstery, tile and grout and pet odor removal cleaning specialist.  Before becoming my own boss I used to work for a large company right here in Dallas TX.  I learned a lot about my trade I  received my IICRC certification and as a matter of fact I became a trainer for other carpet cleaning technicians.   It was my job to make sure they maintained the standards of this company.

Through this experience I learned much about the big company structure and how its main purpose is to get everyone doing and producing the desired results communicated by the owner.   Through hard efforts in training, motivating and systemizing it was proving to be a failure in producing the exact expectations of the owner.  The answer to the problem was simply too many different types of carpet cleaners. The good ones were great at cleaning with great upsells and good reviews where on the other hand some of the other carpet cleaners didn’t clean well, didn’t upsell and had poor customer reviews.    Every customer received a different experience based on whoever served them.

No matter how hard companies try to work to product replicas there simply isn’t a better way to replace the consistency and character of a good business person.  You can always count on the same results, with the same person, with a big smile, and with the constant satisfaction they leave you!

As a side note I would suggest always checking into online reviews before attempting to try any business or company.  It’s the difference in becoming a victim vs a life time customer.  For example check out mine at Qualitycarecarpetcleaningtx.com.  Good luck at finding the right fit for your service needs.
