Carpet care is very important for the longevity of your carpets.  One thing to remember is your carpets are one of the most expensive assets in your home.  As a professional carpet cleaner, I feel it is my job to inform all of my customers of the importance of properly maintaining their carpets to help maintain their life span.  Below I have listed the top three most important things you can do to help maintain the longevity and beautiful appearance of your carpet.

  1. Protect it

What is protectant?  Protectant is liquid silicone applicant that covers the dye sites of carpet fibers.  Dye sites are punctured holes in the fiber that allows the color dye to enter and thus create the color of the carpet.  All of the holes are not completely filled with dyes produced by the carpet manufacturing mills therefore are holes receptacle to staining from other dyes.  Like juice, wine, and other dye matter.   When the carpet mills produce carpets after they apply the dyes to the carpet they then also apply a protectant to cover the exposed holes.  Unfortunately this protectant can peel off over time with traveling and vacuuming.  Its recommend by the mills to have a professional carpet cleaner reapply this protectant after a carpet cleaning every year.

Also having carpet protectant applied can be a great for high- traffic areas.  It helps vacuuming by 50%.  By doing this it will greatly help to minimize the soiling that causes damage to the fibers by crushing under your feet in these specific areas. So having protectant added after a professional cleaning can greatly increase the life of your carpet! Wow!

  1. Vacuum regularly

Vacuuming on a regular basis is another way to keep carpets looking fresh because it eliminates dirt in the fibers of the carpet.   Like I briefly mentioned earlier when dirt with its many sharp edges and dust is left in carpet and the carpet is walked on, it can damage the fiber and change the way the fibers reflect light – making the carpet look dingy or dull and lay flat. When you vacuum often, you remove these damaging particles, prolonging the life of your carpet by years!  In fact, it’s proven to be the best way to maintain your carpet.  For best results make sure your vacuum height setting is properly set for the height of your carpet fibers.  And also make sure your bag is not full, this will limit the suction power of your vacuum.  Always remember that vacuuming on a regular basis is  even better than professional cleanings!

  1. Get regular professional carpet cleanings

One popular opinion is that you don’t need to have your carpet professionally cleaned until you can see dirt, crushing or dullness. However, waiting until you see the signs of damage means that the damage is already done.  So don’t wait!  Its like waiting too long for an oil change for your car engine!  Just know that if dirt can ruin a car engine it certainly will ruin your carpet fibers.

In fact, according to manufacturers’ specifications, it is recommended to perform a professional cleaning and stain protection treatment on your carpet every six to twelve months, even if the carpet doesn’t look like it needs to be cleaned.   Without doing this you could lose your warranty for your carpets.   How frequently you should have them cleaned and what areas all depends on the traffic and messes that are created in your home on a daily basis.  The most contributing factors in this case are by pets and children.

A regular carpet maintenance cleaning will help prevent dulling and crushing, and stain protecting your carpet will make spills easier to clean up, as well as keeping your carpet fibers from fraying.   If you live in Denton TX, Flower Mound TX, or Lewisville TX and need to have  carpet cleaning, tile cleaning,  upholstery cleaning, or air duct cleaning  by a professional then Quality Care Carpet Cleaning provides both those services.  You can contact us at 940-206-2372 or [email protected].  We can even do a regular cleaning schedule where we send out reminders for the next cleaning.  Making it easy without forgetting the next service!
